“I’m depressed.”

“I’m depressed.”

That’s how an email I received a few days ago started from a friend who is in the midst of a job search. Why was he depressed?
People who indicated they would help him by making an introduction, scheduling a call, etc., didn’t follow up like they said they would.
This happens more than anyone would care to admit. Honestly, I’ve been guilty of this myself so no casting of stones here. Everyone’s busy and WFH has only added to the stress.
That said, trying to find a job is hard enough so let’s resolve to show people respect and honor our commitment if we say we’re going to do something.

One of the most natural things we can do when we have a loss (including losing a job) is to withdraw. We feel sad, hurt, and maybe angry too. I don’t know about you, but if I’m feeling this way the last thing I want to do is go meet a lot of new people!

The desire to isolate is exactly the opposite action we should take though.
I have a friend who once described feeling like he was living in a snow globe, stuck in his own little reality while watching the world seemingly go on around him. If you’re feeling that way too, here are a few pearls of life wisdom that also apply to a job search:
· Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.· A brother or sister is born for a time of adversity.· A wise person seeks many counselors.· As iron sharpens iron, so one person another.
The obvious lesson is that we are better together! Whether it’s encouragement, new ideas, networking relationships, or accountability, there are many reasons to be in community in the midst of a job search.

Life Change

“I’m a heroin addict.”

That’s what my new friend Ian told me on Sunday. I was part of a group hosting a picnic this weekend at a park in a struggling part of Cincinnati. I sat down near him to learn about his story.
“I’m a heroin addict. I have a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in about an hour near here and I sometimes come to this park to remember where I came from. I used to shoot up here and I don’t want to forget why I want to change my life.”
I don’t know what your Tell Me About Yourself story is but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t start like that!
Ian went on to share that he is 25 years-old and has been using since he was 18. About 8 months ago he started going to NA to get the help he needed. He said his sponsor was key to teaching him the 12 step program as well as being someone he can call 24/7 if he ever needs to reach out.
There was a lot more but in the interest of space, let me just say that Ian’s story really moved me. I am so inspired by a young man who wants to transform his life and become the person he was meant to be. I see at least four qualities in Ian that apply to anyone going through a challenging time:

Humility
Having a Plan
Being in community with others
Persistence

Rip Up the Script

Coaches often share nuggets of wisdom to nail interview questions like “What would your 90 day plan look like?” and “How would you deal with a difficult colleague?”

We should anticipate and be prepared for challenging interview questions, but many posts give folks nearly word-for-word responses. That just doesn’t resonate as true with me (and I suspect it doesn’t ring true for the interviewer either). Plus, it’s impossible to carry a catalog in your head of the best answers to every conceivable question.
Alternatively, be genuine while intentional with your answers. Speak from a set of core values more than from a script. Knowing what you believe and why you believe it will give you a “safe place” to go to in your mind, especially in the heat of an interview. Secondly, your research and previous interactions at the company will give you a sense for the culture and the expectations of the role. Use these to your advantage to frame your values to the position your interviewing for.
Intentional authenticity will differentiate you from the pool of candidates and build trust. Employers often hire the person they believe is the best fit, not because of their superior qualifications, but because they want to work with people they like and trust.
